About the event

Wesley Theological Seminary will offer this special program, in which Beth Norcross will team with Rev. Dr. Kip Banks, a leader on racial inequity issues in the D.C. area and pastor of a church on the banks of the Anacostia, to present Spirituality & Eco-justice on the Anacostia. This course will explore ecology, spirituality and eco-justice along this urban river, examining the role of racism in ecological abuse and seeking spiritual awakening for healing and justice within sacred landscapes and communities.   

This program is a wonderful opportunity to for seminarians and pastors to earn seminary credit or CEUs. It is also open to all with special Wesley registration.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

  1. To understand and appreciate the natural and human history of the Anacostia River, including historic eco-racism along it.
  2. To understand and experience the ecology of the Anacostia River.
  3. To explore how culture and ethnicity affect one’s relationship with nature.
  4. To understand the concepts of eco-racism and eco-justice.
  5. To understand and experience spirituality in nature, in particular the spirituality of water.
  6. To examine the relationship between spirituality, nature and race.
  7. To examine how a spiritual relationship with nature might inform and transform our  relationship with each other and Earth.

  • Online on select Tuesdays, January 24 - May 2, 2023, 6:30 - 8:30pm ET 
  • PLUS two required field trips on the river (if taking for credit), March 25 & April 15
